i bought ipod touch

I Bought an iPod Touch

It was my birthday recently and I somehow managed to talk my wife into

going with me to the Apple store to pick up an iPod Touch. I have to

say that I was tentative because of all of the screen problems that I

had been reading about. Well, I have had my Touch for less than a week

and I am already in love with it. I don't have a ton of music or

anything so I opted for the 8gig version. I don't even have it half

full. This is my first iPod and I really like it. I need to get a FM

transmitter though...

Anyway, as a web developer this thing intrigues me. Yea, Steve Jobs

said that you get the real Internet, and you do... But, I am really

starting to like "iPhone" websites. Since my Touch is virtually an

iPhone I have been trying to find good sites that properly handle the

UI interaction. You might think this is a no brainer but consider

this. There really is no "drag" event that I know of on the mobile

version of Safari. So if you plan on writing something involving

dragging (e.g. Google Maps) you will be out of luck as that event

scrolls the page. There are definitely people doing things correctly

though. The best two examples I have found are Meebo (IM on the web,

GTALK, AIM, MSN, etc) available here and the iPhone version of digg

available here.

Those of you interested in developing for the iPhone and Touch can hit

the Developer's Center on Apple.com You might want to check out Aptana

also - you can download an iPhone SDK plugin to help you get started

writing iPhone websites.

I think these little mini-sites, RIAs or web gadgets are really going

to catch on. It is a pain to do "pinches" to zoom in and out on a web

page on the iPod. It is much easier to be provided a style sheet that

pushes the content in a mobile friendly manner. The plus is that

Safari supports a large fraction of web standards, thus developers

aren't working with old school legacy code when developing their apps.

The only complaint I have is that the Mail and Maps apps which are

available on the iPhone are not on the iPod. They also pulled the plug

on adding calendar events from the iPod (they can only be added when

syncing). So, an iPhone it isn't - a great iPod it is. Apple really

needs to release some apps to add on to this thing or release an SDK.

I have one final thought on why Flash isn't on the iPhone or iPod

Touch. My guess is that has to do with the whole "drag" or general

event interaction. As I mentioned, dragging your finger across the

screen scrolls the page. Actually having flash focused to trap the

events might be a difficult task to tackle. I think it is only a

matter of time... Once we have Flash we will have a plethora of

mini-sites and RIAs for the iPhone and Touch.

If you are thinking about the Touch, I would recommend it. Just bear

in mind that it isn't quite the iPhone minus the phone. You lose some

other things as well. Google some reviews or take a walk to your local

Apple Store and you will get a good idea what you are in for. Also,

Feel free to send me iTunes cards, etc. :).

I'm extemely tempted, but I'm waiting until Flash is on the iPhone or

iPod Touch before diving in. There is a rumored firmware coming out

soon, maybe it'll provide the flash player as well.

I think you're probably right. Look at how much people have enjoyed

the convenience of emailing from their blackberries, and calling from

their cell phones. People are going more places and they want to keep

in contact with the important people at the same time. These devices

allow that!

Hi I also just bought a Touch and I'm still really impressed with the

UI and the versatility for managing music, videos, podcasts and its 3d

effects. I also miss the Email app but I'm pretty sure there will come

up iphone/ipod touch applications to install. There are already some

but not compatible with the 1.1.1 firmware for the Touch so we might

wait some week before to start customising our ipods.

I've got also a blog where I just started to post about the touch and

I'll post some videos as well. It's in Spanish though, so if still

interested check it out.

As Ipod touch users, we can keep in touch and discuss some bug/issues

in the touch. To start I just came across with a sort of bug when

using the cover flow. If you've got two albums with the same name

regardless they belong to different artists the touch's cover flow

groups them in one album.

cheers mate

This might be a silly suggestion (but nothing ventured) does it happen

that you can drag when two fingers and scroll with one?

I found out my accident that my MBP does that kinda of thing via the

touchpad so I just wondered.

Thanks,

Welshbird - two fingers are used to "pinch-zoom" in and out - one

finger scrolls. A double tap zooms in and out in some cases as well. I

love the two finger scroll on the mac notebooks! You can also set it

up that two fingers on the trackpad and a thumb click on the button

registers as a right click - very handy.

I myself just purchased an iPod touch. It took me 15 minutes to

install the jailbreak app and toss the iphone apps in. It is worth the

money if you pimp it out. I even have an Nes emulator installed.

Google the instructions, do your homework, and enjoy the rewards.

Just got my Ipod Touch (16g) I'm really impressed by the UI but I just

can't believe that Safari doesn't support Flash. It's ridiculous!!!

Flash is everywhere on web pages and Apple should have integrated it

on the release. Just because of that I don't recommend the purchase

yet. Browsing is useless without Adobe Flash.

I quite recently bought a touch (as it happens I'm writing this on it)

and love the UI but there are a few bugs that i've found so far so a

firmware update soon wouldn't surprise me at all and i heard a rumour

that it would include some kind of flash support. This would be vey

nice as (apart from an inbuilt mail app) flash is the one thing my

touch doesn't do that i'd like it to

hi.I'm now replying u with my new iPod touch (8gb) which is my

birthday present from my dear. I was wondering why safari doesn't

support flash in iPod touch. I'm a junior multimedia designer. But

couldn't understand bout the "drag" event u mentioned. Do you know

anyway I can watch youtube video using safari in iPod touch?

Posted by Blogger Elvie | 1:10 PM

am as well on 16 gb touch hacked And love it but why u ask ? About

watching youtube videos from safari you have youtube button so don't

need safari. But flash is so needed!!!!!!!!!!!!

LET APPLE HEAR OUR PLEA, BRING IN THE FLASH!

Posted by Anonymous Anonymous | 11:17 PM

I agree with you guys.No flash at all. I have tried watching tv series

at ABC site from ipod. ABC can't launch the player because no Flash.I

think it has to do with money because Apple is selling Greys Anatomy

for 1.99/episode and 34.99 for new season episode pass. Well Ipod is

too expensive for me if it's just for music, pictures n checking news.

This is the thing I dont quite understand. The itouch obviously "does"

support flash, hence why you can view youtube videos using the youtube

button. But when you goto the youtube website via safari it doesnt

allow you to play the movies. Obviously its just a safari integration

problem and I'm convinced it will get fixed in a firmware update.

The whole flash thing is off putting plus the lack of 3G on iPhone,

just crazy.

Nice birthday present. I purchased an iPod touch for my son on his

birthday too. He would use my iPhone around the house as a wireless

web access tool... but he didn't like my taste of music. Now he has

his Wi-Fi device and he can fill it with his style of music.

I would 100% recommend the iPod touch - beatiful design as expected

from apple, very intuative, haven't even opened the manual!

However the lack of flash is a little frustrating, not because I feel

it "should" have been available from the off, but because it puts a

limit such a fantastic tool - I can and will wait for an update or new

improved ipod though, because in every other area it surpasses all

expectations - definately enough to keep you busy!

The rsn why the iPod is able to goto you tube through tv link and not

through safari is bc through thee link the videos are in I think MPEG

or some equivocal format. Damn I gotta put the app in installer to

turn off autocorrect on the IPOd touch.

Posting from my new touch, and it is amazing. I really do wish they

had enabled at least Flash lite though, hoping for an update sometime

soonish.

Posted by Blogger culmor30 | 9:39 AM

there already are ppl hacking the touch so you can get flash I'm sure

we ll have an update soon

Posted by Anonymous Anonymous | 11:59 AM

LOL, I too am posting from my touch. I REALLY recommend it. I dislike

he fact that it can't run flash, but otherthan that I love it. The one

bug that I've found is that sometimes my album artwork doesnt 'load'

correctly and I have to put my iPod upright and then sideways again to

it to display my artwork correctly.

I am reading with interest all your comments. I too have an ipodtouch

16gb and I am frustrated that there is no flash. How can a fantastic

piece of equipment not support flash. I changed my email from a

busiess and personal point of view but now cannot IM any of my

contacts. Very dissapointed but at least Icannow get my emails where

ever I am.
