runaway nikeipodnike

Nike+iPod Sport Kit but is disinclined to drop a hundred bucks on a

new pair of special Nike+ kicks, comes the RunAway AnyShoe adapter.

This $8 weatherproof sensor holder attaches to your running shoe's

laces and has an easy-to-access button to turn the sensor's wireless

signal off for air travel--which is a slight improvement over the

Nike+ shoes, which require you to remove an insole to get at the

device.

The RunAway is available in five colors to match even the orangest of

sneakers. Get your training groove on this way for $30. It is an

investment that'll reap rewards in more runs and a new-found

appreciation for leggings. - Matt Schneiderman

ipod touch radio stations

ipod touch radio stations

Many of you have asked me about this ipod touch radio, so I thought it

would be cool to mention and see if any of visitors stumbled a website

where you can listen to radio over the ipod touch.

Is it posibile ?

I would say so, just read one of my articles that I wrote "how to

listen to music online for free.

That tells us that if somebody makes radio stations in similar way, we

could all listen to radio at work, at home, at airports or anywhere

wireless connection is offered!

SharePod Progress Pt. 2

Well I've just realised its been over a week(!) since I last

posted...its crazy how time can fly by sometimes.

I didnt have much time over the Easter break to work on SharePod, but

here is the current status:

* iPod Songs/Playlists reading and writing

* Play Counts reading (the number of times / last time youve

listened to a song). In SharePod 2 this file wasn't read, so if

you didnt use iTunes, your Play Counts werent updated.

* iPod Shuffle alpha support. I say alpha because (right now) I dont

have a Shuffle to test it on, but I am writing the Shuffle

database file correctly as far as I can tell.

As I said in a previous post, I am writing SharePod in 2 parts - the

iPod functionality and then the actual SharePod application over the

top of it.

The application part of this I haven't really started on, but will be

concentrating on this soon so I can start alpha testing it on my own

iPods properly.

There is no particular release date in my mind yet, but I want to work

solidly on it for the next 2 weeks at which point I hope to be able to

release. Probably not feature complete, but something more usable and

stable than the current versions.

If there are any UI designers out there who have great ideas for the

direction of the SharePod UI send me an email! (jeff@sturm.net.nz)

SharePod Version 3 Progress

I've been working on SharePod v.3 for about 3 nights now. (I work

during the day and usually busy in the weekend so nights are all I

have..)

Progress so far has been really good, its coming together so much

faster than the original SharePod 1.0, where every part of the iPod's

internal database had to be investigated. Although there will be no

current-version SharePod code in Version 3, all the logic has been

transferrable to the new codebase.

I have a fully working iTunesDB parser which is built from the start

to allow easy reading and writing. The current codebase by comparison

had the write ability hacked on top, so there were some things it was

just too hard to support (editing of song tags, for example)

The next step is finish the writing part of the code - right now it

just writes back the file as it reads it, but it should take into

account new songs added/removed, tags changed and playlists modified.

Once that is done (hopefully tonight), the plan is:

- Playcounts file parser (to update the number of times a song has

been played etc)

- Artwork file parser (to read the album art descriptions)

- Code to actually read, display and import the iPod-formatted artwork

- iPod Shuffle file reading/writing

new 55g ipod arrives

The new 5.5G iPod Arrives...

...And I am dissapointed to say the least. After all the hype and

publicity this things been getting, you'd think Apple would offer

their customers something new and groundbreaking, similar to what the

1G did a few short years ago. Don't give up hope though, apparantely

the "Real" next generation iPod is dropping next year, but I'm not

holding my breath. Nevertheless, a few key improvements have been made

to the new 5.5G The screen is now 60% brighter, the battery can last

up to 3.5 hours during video playback, and the iPod includes new

headphones, but otherwise the specs remain the same. As for software,

the iPod is finally getting gapless playback, text-based search and

brightness controls, along with a whole slew of games. The 'Pod has

Bejeweled, Cubis 2, Mahjong, Mini Golf, Pac Man, Tetris, Texas Hold

'Em, Vortex, and Zuma bundled, and you can nab new games for $5 each

off of iTunes. Maybe the best news is that Apple is dropping the

prices and bumping the storage: you can get a spankin' new 30GB iPod

for $250, and the new 80 gigger for $350. No word yet on availability.

Feedback to iTunes Store:

Web Order # :

Support Subject : Account or Billing

Sub Issue : My credit card or billing information is not accepted

iTunes Account Name: Not provided

Platform : Windows XPSP2+

Comments:

I want to download the January Software Upgrade of iPod Touch. I

created an Apple Account since I haven't done that since I bought

my iPod last December. After that I have created an Apple Account,

I tried to buy the software but iTunes gives me a message saying

that my Apple ID has not yet been used with the iTunes Store so I

tried creating an Apple Account for the US iTunes Store. I noticed

that the billing address of my payment information must be in the

US. I live in the Philippines, so I searched for Philippines in the

list of countries where iTunes is available but Philippiines is not

in the list. What should I do now? I cannot create an iTunes Store

Account because I live in a country where iTunes is not available.

How could I get the January Software Upgrade of iPod Touch? Is

there another way to purchase it even if I live in a country where

iTunes is not offered? Please help me. Thanks.

Email Response:

Dear Maruel,

I understand you would like to purchase iPod January Update on the

iTunes Store.

If you would like to purchase from an iTunes Store in a particular

country, you must have both a residential address and a billing

address in that particular country. Items on any particular

country's iTunes Store are available only for distribution to

customers who use a credit card, debit card, iTunes Gift

Certificate, or iTunes Gift Card issued in and for that country.

For example, the U.S. iTunes Store can only sell to U.S. residents

using credit cards or debit cards that were issued in and for the

U.S., or U.S. residents using iTunes Gift Certificates or Gift

Cards that were purchased in the U.S.

I am sorry, but the iPod January Update is not available for

purchase anywhere other then the iTunes Store at this time. If you

would like to request that it be available by other means you may

do so by visiting the iTunes feedback page at:

http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunes.html

I hope this information has been helpful. Please let me know if you

have any questions or if I can continue to assist you in any way.

Thank you for choosing Apple products and have a lovely day.

Sincerely,

Lisa

iTunes Store Customer Support

My Reply:

Will it be okay if I just let someone that lives in the U.S.

purchase the iPod January Update for me? I will still be using my

Apple Account but I will let someone living in the U.S. pay the

update for me. Will that be ok?

The feedback form of http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunes.html does

not have a request type suitable for my problem. The request type

is required. What can I do? Is there another way I can make a

request?

Email Response:

Dear Maruel,

Thank you for your reply.

Unfortunately, your update it delivered directly via your iTunes

account so you must have a valid account in a iTunes country to get

the update, and be logged into that account on your phone.

You may be able to locate more information on how to make this

happen by visiting the iPod troubleshooting tips, tutorials, and

service information here:

http://www.apple.com/support/ipod

I hope these resources help to resolve the issue you are

experiencing. If you require more in-depth assistance, you may wish

to call Apple technical support (there may be a fee associated with

the call). To find the appropriate phone number, please visit:

http://www.apple.com/support/contact..._contacts.html

I am very sorry to refer you to another department for this issue.

We here at iTunes Store Customer Support are only trained to answer

nontechnical questions exclusively about billing, customer

accounts, downloading purchases, and iTunes Store content. The

wonderful folks at Apple Technical Support are better qualified to

assist you further.

iTunes Store Customer Support

Sentiments...

This is my first iPod and I think the first Apple products to own. I

don't that its not common for Apple to charge for an update. When I

told a friend who also owns an iPod that I can't get the January

update because I have to buy it, sinagot niya ako ng isang malaking

"BAKIT?" at "Ano ba yan? Bakit kailangan pa bayaran?". I just bought

this iPod last month and I think its unfair to charge $20 for the

upgrade.

Anyway, even before I knew that its not common and even now that I

think its unfair, I'm still willing to pay for the $20 because I'm

afraid to jailbrake . So I had an idea, why not let a friend or a

relative in the U.S. to pay for it. So I called the Tech Support for

Philippines, which is 1-800-1441-0234, to ask some questions and if my

idea is ok or legal. My call has been assigned to this female agent

who have an indian-like accent that is little hard to understand. I

told her about how I want to purchase the upgrade and she told me the

same info like in the reply I got from my feedback. I told her about

my idea, she put me on hold to confirm it. When she got back, she told

me that I can't do that. I explained it again, and I find out that she

misunderstood me the first time. She though I was just going to give a

U.S. billing info so that I can create a U.S. iTunes Store account and

from the tone of her voice, she sounded like that's illegal and you

can't make up details like that. I explained it again and told her

that I will let somebody in the U.S. to purchase the upgrade for me. I

told her that I will put the billing info of my friend or relative to

that they will be the ones to be charged. Then she replied, I don't

really remember the exact words but it goes like this, "There are many

customers here who are calling about this issue but you are the first

one I heard to have an idea like this. Please hold on while I confirm

it." When she got back, she told me that it was ok. I asked again to

confirm it and make sure it is legal. She said yes, its legal. She

asked for the serial number of my iPod and the call was ended.

Now, I'm just waiting for a while and reading other the user comments

and feedbacks in other threads and other forums in other websites. I

also waiting for Apple, I hope they give it for free. When all else

fails, I think i going to continue with my idea if I'm still afraid to

jailbrake my iPod.

P.S.

Magkano kaya ang tawag dun sa tech support na yun? Medyo matagal din

kasi kami nagusap kasi hindi ko siya masyado maintindihan at ang tagal

niya bumalik kapag hinohold niya ako.

Not what you want as a response to your threat letter: FairTest, an

organization that often challenges reliance on SAT scores in

education, received a threat letter from the College Board, which runs

the SATs, claiming that the scores posted on FairTest's site infringed

the College Board's copyright. FairTest responded. Making claims on

behalf of rival ACT might be one of the most interesting instances of

overreaching I've seen in a while.

What's sad is that the claim that a score -- a single number, or even

a series of them -- is protected by copyright is not generally

ludicrous, though in this case I think it is. But some cases have held

that prices are "compilations" and thus protected by copyright. If a

number is produced by the exercise of skill and judgment --

determining, for example, how to aggregate cars to determine an

average price for a certain make and model in a certain geographic

area -- then a claim of copyrightability passes the laugh test, even

though copyright isn't supposed to exist for words and short phrases.

I suspect the College Board is prepared to argue that, like prices,

its categories (scores by race, gender, family income) are produced

not mechanically but by making decisions -- about, for example, how to

define "race" ("multiracial" is an option, as is "other," as is

"prefer not to respond," as is no "response") and where to break

income levels ($18,000 or $20,000?) -- and therefore the resulting

numbers are the product of the College Board's creative judgment.

I'd be inclined to call these numbers unprotectable "facts." Though

the fact/expression line is a tricky one, these are not particularly

Salt Shakers as Visual Aids, Bad, Yet Appropriate iPod Songs That Come Up on

the Random Setting, and the Longest Title Since That Fionna Apple Record

Don't you hate when some jag-bag is telling you a story, usually about

a car accident, and he goes into a long description with visual aids

to give you a better mental picture of the events? He's always all

like, "So, this salt shaker is me, right? And this sugar and sweetener

container is the other guy's car. And . . ." I'm always a patient,

polite listener, but I really want to say, "Just stop right there, you

uninteresting slob. Your story will not magically become interesting

when I've achieved the PERFECT visual of the intersection due to your

God damn diorama presentation."

In a completely unrelated matter, on my bike ride home from work today

I heard Semicharmed Kind of Life by Third Eye Blind, and while that

song is horribly nerdy, it made me really happy today. Even though I

was sure no one could tell what song I was listening to, I got a

little embarrassed that I was listening to it, and what's worse,

enjoying it so much. I will say though, it's the perfect

make-you-happy-whilst-you-bike-by-the-lake song, because in the video

all the guys in the band were merrily riding in some sort of gay-ass,

moped procession. So, given the situation, the song was perfect to

listen to, while I would not be caught dead listening to it on any

other occasion I can think of.

This is even more the case with another song I heard on today's bike

ride: Riding the Storm Out by REO Speedwagon. There was a massive

storm hitting the Chicago area, so I was trying to bike home fast

before I got caught in the thick of it. As it turns out, the only real

iphone itunes ipod im not sure

iPhone, iTunes, iPod, I'm not sure

I recommend to you Ajit Jaokar's brilliant analysis of Apple's much

trumpeted entry into the mobile market with iPhone. Ajit's "tail

wagging the dog" analysis is not only extremely perceptive any

insightful, but describes something very important about Apple's

iPhone strategy which might have passed some of us by.

Ajit has picked up on a piece on ZDNet about the iPhone feature Visual

voicemail as announced by Steve Jobs himself -- "wouldn't it be great

if you didn't have to listen to five of them to list to the sixth?

Just like email you can go directly to the voicemails that interest

you."

As Ajit points out this could only be achieved if iPhone had a very

special relationship with the operator community because voice mail is

stored in the network, not on the phone. It tells of a very

proprietary approach.

And here's another one - I picked up whilst browsing that iPhone can

only be configured while connected to iTunes. It is perhaps of no

surprise that the iPhone follows in the iPod footsteps of operating in

its own tightly controlled an self-fulfilling ecosystem.

This does echo the entire Apple Mac strategy from day 1 of a closed

ecosystem, and it may be that Apple (probably uniquely) can make this

happen. There's a lot of evidence pointing that way (although it seems

unlikely this iPhone strategy can work in Europe). It is however

iphone and ipod touch 8021x and leap

iPhone and iPod Touch, 802.1X and LEAP

This is more a note for people who were wondering like myself: the

current OS X that comes with the iPod Touch and iPhone cannot handle

either 802.1X or LEAP (before anyone tells me it handles 802.11x just

fine, please remember that 802.1X and LEAP are specific forms of

encrypting a wireless connection, not types of wireless connections.

802.11x is instead a generic term used for the varying speeds of

wireless, i.e. 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11n, ....)

This is really too bad, as both are have been built in to Mac OS X

since at least version 10.3, and also both are the main ways I can get

wireless at OSU. I have every intent on finding out if this gets fixed

with subsequent OS updates. Incidentally, a big reason I am posting

this is due to some Apple Store employees erroneously telling me it

should work on the iPhone and iPod Touch, since it is built in to Mac

OS X, which shares a lot of common code with the OS X on both devices

(as far as anyone seems to know). I don't fault them for saying this;

I mean, who would think something like this would be left out?

Update (2007/01/18: I have posted an update to this here, but long

story short, it appears that the 1.1.3 update has not fixed this, at

least for the iPod Touch.

dispatch from ipod nation gym rat

A Dispatch From iPod Nation - The Gym Rat Edition

I am one of those people that has to have music on constantly. I work

with music, I cook with music and I go to sleep with music, among

other things. And now that I'm on this healthier living program, I

need my music to work out in the gym.

I try to go to the gym at least 5 days a week, but no less than 3 days

a week. And I'm one of those people that needs plenty of motivation to

do the right thing. I created a playlist on my iPod called Benet's

Workout Music. And the songs on that list need 2 things - a good beat

and a motivational message.

I like to start my workouts with a spiritual song, kind of like my

prayer to God to get me through the workout. I have 3 on the list -

"Halleujah Chorus" (yes, that one) by the Quincy Jones All-Stars,

"Optimistic" by Sounds of Blackness and "Never Alone" by the

Contemporary Gospel Choir (on the sountrack of the movie "Fame. No

offense, but no one can sing uplifting spiritual songs like black

people. Halleujah Chorus is self explanatory. Optimistic (as long as

you keep your head to the sky, be optimistic) is just great

motivation. Never alone - "I heard the voice of Jesus, telling me to

fight on, promised never to leave me, oh, never alone" again, self

explanatory.

Next up is "Walking on Broken Glass," by Annie Lennox. And if you're

trying to cut me down You know that I might bleed Cause if you're

trying to cut me down I know that you'll succeed And if you want to

hurt me There's nothing left to fear Cause if you want to hurt me

You're doing really well my dear Works for me!

I've always been a Madonna fan, and her "Die Another Day" from the

James Bond soundtrack has a great beat for boosting the heart rate -

I'm break the cycle, I'm gonna shake up the system, I'm gonna destroy

my ego, I'm gonna close my body now

I've got "Let's Get It Started" by the Black Eyed Peas - Step by step,

like you're into new kid.Inch by inch with the new solution.Trench men

hits, with no delusion. The feeling's irresistible and that's how we

movin'. Can't you just feel the burn in this song?

Peter Gabriel gets two entries on the iPod - "Big Time" and "Solsbury

Hill." Big Time has a nice beat - big time I'm on my way-I'm making it

big time big time I've got to make it show yeah big time big time so

much larger than life big time I'm going to watch it growing big time.

Solsbury Hill is one of 2 songs I use to wind down from the workout -

When illusion spin her net I'm never where I want to be And liberty

she pirouette When I think that I am free Watched by empty silhouettes

Who close their eyes but still can see No on taught them etiquette I

will show another me

Another good walking beat song is Cheryl Lynn's "Got to Be Real." No

inspiration, I just like listening to it. The best

pump-me-up-on-the-treadmill song by far is the extended version of

"Desert Rose" by Sting.

"Higher Ground" by Stevie Wonder is great when I'm lifting on the

machines. I'm so darn glad He let me try it again, 'Cause my last time

on earth I lived a whole world of sin. I'm so glad that I know more

than I knew then. Gonna keep on tryin' till I reach the highest

ground. Doesn't that just make you want to go to the gym right now?

I was a big fan of ESPN's tv show "Playmakers," and I loved the theme

song - "I AM, the invincible man..." It's a shame the NFL forced the

show off the air. After that, is Redman's "Time 4 Sum Aksion," a real

heart pumper that I like during free weights.

Another good one for the treadmill is the extended remix of the

BeeGee's "Staying Alive" by N-Trance - I can flip so, I'm a drop the

solo tip somethin' for da honeys in da crowd lend me yar ear so I can

turn the party out, 'till tomorrow afternoon coz when I grips ma steel

no-one leaves da room ,so tell me can you feel the madskills comin'

wid da fever, fever, fever. Whee!!

I also have the extended version of Tom Browne's "Funkin For Jamaica,"

Phil Collins' "Sussudio," the 12-inch mix of Soul II Soul's "Back to

Life," TLC's "I'm Good at Being Bad," the aching version of Tori Amos'

"Lovesong," (a remake of The Cure hit), Seal's "Waiting for You,"

Nenah Cherry's "Buffalo Stance," and Kansas' "Wayward Son." I end the

workout with James Taylor's "Long Ago and Far Away." Taylor is good

for relaxing.

And now for the numbers - I'm down another 1.4 pounds, to 238.8. I'm

so glad to be out of the 240s, and I'm starting to feel it. Have a

great weekend!

ipod meet seinfeld

iPod meet Seinfeld

It is now official I have more songs on my iPod than ever before.

After screwing it up last week I concentrated myself on loading songs

on it and now I have more than 6000 songs on it. To top it all off

since last evening I started to fool around converting my Seinfeld DVD

box sets into mp4 files for the 'Pod.

If you have been reading this post you'll know that I have been

calling my three computers Sidney, Newman and Kramer. Sidney for Sid

Vicious the punk rocker that committed suicide after being accused of

killing his whore girlfriend, Kramer for Cosmo Kramer from Seinfeld

and Newman for Jerry's arch enemy, again from Seinfeld. And I would

like to introduce to you my iPod which is named: Art Vandalay a George

Constanza alias. As you can see I am a Seinfeld fan.

I mentioned in the other blog the reason for placing Seinfeld episodes

on my iPod is that we will not have a lot of television shows to watch

since no new shows are being produced because of the WGA strike.

I still haven't used the Epiphany browser to its fullest, but I will,

and I try Opera once again and then decide which browser is the best

for me.

I guess that is it for now. This post was not really informative but

ai on your ipod shuffle

AI on your iPod Shuffle

I was browsing Beyond Satire, a site run by Ellen Spertus (one of my

summer colleagues on the orkut team), and I happened to hit a link

about something called the Martin Shuffle. It turned out to be a name

for a way to find a particular song using the "shuffle" and "next"

features of the iPod shuffle. I read the article and was both

intrigued and amused because it tried to apply some randomized

mathematical analysis on iPod Shuffle usage; namely, the writer was

analyzing what the optimal policy would be for finding a particular

song on the iPod shuffle and how long that would take.

Two elements in the article caught my attention. One, on the right

side of the page, there was an image of the Randomized Algorithms

textbook that was used in Karger's 6.856 class, a class that I took,

enjoyed, thought was consuming my life and causing endless pain, and

subsequently dropped. Second, the analysis used the concept of Markov

Decision Processes (MDP), a term that I vaguely remembered from

Kaelbling's 6.825 class (Techniques in AI).

Quite frankly, this was one of the coolest AI/mathematical/algorithm

articles that I've read in some time. For a while, my impression of AI

has been that it was too heavyweight and abstract for solving

real-world decision problems. AI papers that I've read, AI problem

sets that I've done, and AI lectures that I've attended typically

dealt with toy problems rather than the more complicated ones that we

encounter in real life. Moreover, I had not really built a real-world

application that used a major AI technique (we're discounting search

in this discussion).

What suprised me the most was that the analysis was elegant and that

the author actually provided short Python code to implement a value

iteration algorithm for solving MDPs. The code was lightweight,

nothing substantial that would've even taken me, a novice in the world

of Python, to write. More importantly, it was concrete where the

lectures that I had on MDPs were abstract. In short, I was amazed and

inspired that the author could take something that I thought to be

abstract, i.e. MDPs, and apply it to a fun but still real question. If

only 6.825 had used fun examples like this instead of robots trying to

vacuum dust from rooms or avoiding monsters, I might actually have

found the material more interesting.

It was clear that the article was written by someone with a nerdy

sense of humor. Upon checking the URL, I realized that the article was

written by none other than Peter Norvig - the author of Artificial

Intelligence: A Modern Approach (AIMA) and the Director of Web Search

Quality at Google. From skimming his website, I saw that he actually

had other pieces of Python code doing practical, lightweight, and

intelligible AI. From reading the article, I'm actually inspired to

bust out my copy of AIMA, relearn some AI techniques that I had

previously thought to be of mainly theoretical value, and see what

other neat questions AI can answer.

Feed Your iPod: Alison Krauss and Robert Plant, "Gone, Gone, Gone (Done

It might just be too much for my senses, one of my favorite rockers

parrying up with #5 on the "Bushido's Musical Crush List" cutting an

album together (and produced by T Bone Burnett), Raising Sand and

touring this summer (the Raising Sand tour-yes hippies, Bonaroo will

be one of their stops) right after the news of Zep's reunion rocking

of the Garden. I just saw this video on VH1 (laugh if you must but if

you are working on sketches and don't have a sound-system hooked up on

your room, VH1 plays some sweet tunes in the wee-hours of the morning)

and ran to the computer to add it. I've heard a little bit of the

album and it will certainly be an addition later today. Dang, what a

great way to start a Friday.

ipod paradox of choice or waaaaah which

The iPod paradox of choice; or Waaaaah which pointless luxury good will make

me happier??

I'm behind on my work since I spent all afternoon drooling over the

new iPods.

Well, not the new Ipod Nano. I imagine it feels good in the hand but

seems to [DEL: have lost the very nice proportions of the old ones

:DEL] be hideously ugly. And are you really going to watch video on

that tiny screen? Gimme the old ones any day.

But cripes, Apple, you had to make things difficult, didn'tcha? I own

a current 60GB iPod. Come upgrade time, do I a) buy a 160GB iPod

Classic and take care of my music storage needs for, say, the next

5-10 years but without any cool new features; or b) Go with the

drool-worthy, internet-connected iPod Touch but have to settle for

only 16gb of storage at a time?

I mean, it's a stunning interface but I don't know if I could take the

portable storage hit. I love having all my music available at all

times. And "iPod Touch" is such a lazy name; was "WiFiPod" taken?

That's what I'm going to call it anyway.

Tough choices. I don't think I could say "No" to either of them. But

I'll take my WiFiPod without the Macy Gray:

Much better.

search for convenience is ipod new cd

10:22 AM

Nothing illustrates people's preference for convenience more than the

evolution of money. Go from bartering goods (think rotting tomatoes),

to (heavy) gold, to (less heavy) gold-pieces, to certificates of

value, to paper-money, to credit-cards, to ... mobile phones(?) and I

hope the point is clear. When it comes to money, people would rather

not deal with it at all; they just want to be able to buy stuff.

The same applies to music-media and the need for quality vs.

convenience. Take a live concert: the best possible quality of music,

not only can you hear it in the best surround-sound possible, you can

also see the band, and feel the emotions going through the crowd. It's

exhilarating, at least I think so. Anything reproduced really only

gives you half the quality.

The tape became a success, even though they were accompanied by a lot

of hissing, because it was so easy to integrate it into social life,

like music should be. You could exchange it with friends, carry them

in your pocket, even listen to it in your car. The CD really had the

same qualities, with the added benefit of no hiss. And along came

MP3s, worse quality than CDs again, with their compression and small

sizes. Yet it became an instant success because we could exchange it

globally, and it had no DRM for liberal home-use. You could burn it on

cheap cds and play in your car.. yay!

iPods are infinitely more expensive, and even though I got my 20 gigs

worth for only EUR50 (student-deal), I don't think I would hesitate to

buy a EUR300 model when mine breaks. The simple answer is convenience

again. It is expensive, yes, but it's so nice to carry a device around

that allows you to play songs in any order, create flexible playlists,

as well as play podcasts and, for some (not me), play video and browse

websites, even call / photograph people. How cool / convenient is

that?

John Gruber wrote another good post about Amazon's new MP3 store and

the fact that it works so well with iTunes and hence iPods:

People buy iPods because they love them. If your music doesn't play

on iPods, it isn't going to sell. And so if (a) you refuse to sell

music downloads without DRM; and (b) no other DRM system other than

Apple's is compatible with iPods; then we're left with a situation

where the only successful store is going to be iTunes. What

Universal and EMI now seem to have learned, at long last, is that

(b) is completely under Apple's control; only (a) -- the labels'

own willingness to allow their music to be sold without DRM -- is

under their control.

The point being is that people don't care about DRM, it will not

affect the way they decide things. They did not buy at the iTunes

store because they were locked into the iPod. They bought at the

iTunes store because it worked so well with the iPod.

That said, the way Apple treats the rest of the world is disgraceful

and I have yet to buy more than 1 song in iTunes. It pissed me of

because I couldn't use it anywhere else, because US-customers get a

more complete offering, including video, because I already feel like a

criminal before I even stole anything... But hey, I agree with the

core-idea of iTunes, not necessarily the legalese surrounding

international business.

Allow me to digress for the rest of the post.

The dilemma of hardware-companies

w580i.png Recently, I bought my brother a Sony Ericsson W580i phone.

It has a lot of media-capabilities and is actually kind of cool. I

like the way that Sony is trying to turn this little device into the

new walkman. But there's two things I hate about it. One is that I

need to use a special plug* with any headphones I want to use (they

don't show you that in the picture). OK, it sucks, but I can deal with

it. And two, the software that comes with the phone stinks!

It might be the computer (note that iTunes works well on that one),

but as soon as the software started I was both confused and

frustrated. Moving music is a three-step process; I had to dig to

understand how to import my music; and the whole process is kind of

slow... even lags down my brother's PC (might be his crappy PC :). But

you could summarise the whole thing down to being pretty

unsatisfactory. Alternatively you can use the phone as a hard drive

and drag files to it using explorer, but it then doesn't import

metadata, like eh what the artist is called and the album.

In both cases, Apple and Sony, you are restricted to using the

software. But the iTunes experience is actually kind of nice (except

if you want to export things -- if it wants to become DRM-free it

should also allow me to move music out of my iPod). You can create

brilliant playlists, etc. iTunes is in fact the interface that no

media-player manufacturer has as yet managed to create, both on the

player or on the computer. And what you see with Creative, Sony, etc.

is that they are clearly not software-companies, focussing all their

energy on the player instead of the software on the computer. But I

digress.

The point is that, even though the W580i is infinitely cheaper, it is

not Walkman 2 or 3, because there is actually no improvement in the

experience. In the technology, yes, in the experience it's a couple of

steps backwards. The reason is very much Sony-specific; it has the

weirdest business-structure where it splits all its divisions into a

competitive matrix, where each has to fight for its yearly budget (if

that sounds familiar, it's because public institutions like schools

operate in the same idiotic way.) And because of this divided

structure, there is no co-operation, no synergy. The hardware-people

create brilliant hardware, like they've always done. The

software-people, because they suck, create inferior software, and

continue to under-perform under Sony's "interesting" mechanism of only

rewarding the strong.

Businesses who want to compete for the next medium in music need to

understand that customers make decisions based on a very simple

principle: "How is my life better because of using your product?" You

need to look beyond the lab, into people's homes to see if your

hardware-solution might benefit from better software, or vice versa.

Or else, you can't even hope to succeed against Apple.

The good thing about the rise of online media-stores, is that if you

can create software that works well with them (e.g. Amazon imports

Converting Video Files for iPod

Got the latest iPod? What about the video contents?

The problem most iPod G5 owners face is not about where to find

videos, but rather how to make their existing collection of videos

play on the iPod. In this article we will talk about converting video

files of almost any sort into files that play on the iPod G5.

Apple's Quicktime Pro is just one of the many tools available for

converting video files into iPod-friendly formats. However, when

talking about versatility, there is probably none that deals with so

many different formats, including Real (.rm / .rmvb), as does ffmpegX.

Plus, you can try it for free!

Where to get ffmpegX

You can download a copy of ffmpegX at

http://homepage.mac.com/major4/download.html

Using ffmpegX to prepare iPod-friendly video

By its sheer power, ffmpegX simply overkills in serving our purpose.

However, it does provide preconfigured settings for making

iPod-friendly video so you don't have to worry about file format, bit

rate, pixel count and all that jazz -- which means ffmpegX has got the

most painstaking part of converting video formats covered!

Talking about ease of use, you practically need not know any better

than how to drag-n-drop using a mouse to get job done. That alone

makes ffmpegX a must-have. I don't mean to steal the thunder from

ffmpegX's comprehensive "how-to's" on its own website, so I suggest

you read the instructions there to find out how to operate the

silly ipod meme

Silly iPod meme

Stolen from Diana Peterfreund, who always seems to be doing goofy

things like this on her blog.

Instructions: set your iPod on shuffle, ask the following questions.

The songs that appear each time are your answers. Cheating is strongly

frowned upon.

I'm actually doing this at home, so it's not my iPod, exactly, but

iTunes on my Mac (which has a substantially larger library to choose

from -- I can only get about 8000 songs onto the iPod, but iTunes has

nearly 14,000.)

1. How does the world see you? "Jenny Was a Friend of Mine" by The

Killers

This could either mean everybody thinks of me as "a friend," or that

I've done something horrible to someone everyone else likes, I guess.

"Was" is a bit ominous in context.

2. Will I have a happy life? "Got My Own Thing Now" by Squirrel Nut

Zippers

I'll take that as a "yes."

3. What do my friends think of me? "Beautiful" by Aimee Mann

Oh, that's incredibly unlikely. Not even I am that self-deluded.

4. Do people secretly lust after me? "Wages of Sin" by Damien Jurado

and Rose Thomas

The answer would appear to be: "Yes, but anyone who does also feels

incredibly guilty about it."

5. How can I make myself happy? "For Shame of Doing Wrong" by Richard

and Linda Thompson

Being a better husband: that one's pretty clear.

6. What should I do with my life? "Russian Autumn Heart" by The Church

Move to Russia? That's lousy advice, but what do you expect from a

jukebox?

7. Will I ever have children? "Red Is the Rose (live)" by The

Chieftains and Nanci Griffith

It's a song about true love, so I'd say "yes" is implied. Good thing,

too, since I've already got a couple of 'em.

8. What is some good advice for me? "Tristesse" by The Church

That's no help. I'll spin again:

"Pictures in the Sand" by The Kinks

Still not very useful.

9. How will I be remembered? "Ten Laws" by Guadalcanal Diary

Hm. A song about breaking all of the Ten Commandments. Not a good

sign, I'd say.

10. What's my signature dancing song? "Stained" by Kristin Hersh

It's utterly undance-able, and the second line is "Hell, you're so

weird." That's about right.

11. What's my current theme song? "Al Bowlly's in Heaven" by Richard

Thompson

But where am I, then? Well, the song goes on "And I'm in limbo, now,"

which isn't terribly promising.

12. What do others think is my current theme song? "End of the Season"

by The Kinks

Positive interpretation: it's a song about someone missing, so they

all miss me.

Negative interpretation: they all think my time is up.

13. What shall they play at my funeral? "38 Line Poem" by The Wonder

Stuff

It is a mostly quiet, touching song about friendship, so that's

plausible.

14. What type of women do I like? "Treatment Bound" by 1929

Good thing I'm already happily married, then!

15. How's my love life? "Variations on La Danza (1951)" by Carl

Stalling and the Warner Brothers Orchestra

Cartoon music, huh? Not a good sign, but, then again, I do already

have two kids, so I can't expect much.

The questions are a bit girly, but you have to expect that, coming out

of the goopy, lovey-dovey end of the literary world. (Yes, this does

seem to be my day to pick on the romance crowd, but I'm sure they can

console themselves with their huge sales, armies of devoted fans, and

ipod classic 80gb silver

iPod Classic 80GB Silver

As of this morning, i am now the proud owner of one of these lol.

I have to say comparred to my previous iPod Mini 4GB, this one realy

does outperform it, and in soo many ways, allow me to explain and

compare.

Well first of all, this iPod has 80GB of storage, thats roughly

20,000, my previous iPod Mini only had 4GB of storage, capable of

1,000 songs, the iPod Classic can also play Photos and Videos,

something that the Mini couldn't do.

The Interface has changed comparring the two, the Mini doesn't have

color and consists of a basic interface, similar to phones made before

2000, the Classic has full colour and therefore has a much clearer

sreen and interface, the screen is also bigger to accomodate photos

and videos.

Apple never fail to amaze me, and this is no exception, a split screen

interface, album art, new search feature and loads of other small

differences, the sound quallity is also an improovment comparred to

older generation iPods.

Upon recieving the box, i was pretty certain things were missing, but

i was wrong, you get the iPod, books, USB Cable, Headphones and a

Cradle thing, the only thing you don't get is a copy of iTunes, upon

connecting the iPod to the PC and iTunes, i was informed the firmware

was out of date, so that was updated fixing some bugs etc.

Overall the iPod Classic is a great product, and anyone looking for a

good sized iPod to hold their media should indeed consider this, i

have the Silver version, it is also available in Black.

Well thats it for this entry, a review of the iPod Classic 80GB, i

shall write another entry during next week to review everything else

which has happened, which i haven't yet mentioned lol.

siruis vs ipod for control of my

Siruis vs. iPod for control of my musical soul

I stand at a musical crossroads.

And no, I am not talking about whether to offer my soul to techno or

country and western (the only way that happens is if I suffer some

horrific closed-head injury and then, well, I couldn't help myself

could I?)

Christmas is coming, and I'm in a pickle to whether to ask for a new

30-gig iPod, or a Sirius Satellite Radio receiver for the car.

My original, first-generation 5-gig iPod is giving up the ghost. It

often forgets its program. It gets to songs that it refuses to play.

In shuffle mode, it'll shuffle for a time, then refuse. Poor little

thing; it's given me years of trustful service, it's got more than

1,000 songs on its brain (punk songs, by virtue of being short and

sweet, has allowed me to surpass its estimated song capacity).

But do I want another one?

Like I said, I've got more than 1,000 songs on it - a 30-gig iPod

would increase that to 7,500 songs - but even I don't want to listen

to a particular song at a particular time (although, yesterday, the

dB's "Any Old Thing" came up and boy, I hadn't heard that in a while

and gave me a big smile). I tend to scroll through the shuffle play to

find something that fits my mood.

(And, please, don't talk to me about playlists; I could make 100

playlists and still find something I don't want to listen to at a

particular time.)

With Sirius, I get new, exciting stuff all the time. If I don't like

the new alternative stuff, I can switch to one of 193 channels of

music, sports or talk radio. All commercial-free.

But, Thom, what about listening to a little Ramones or White Stripes

or The Replacements at work? Sirius is satellite radio for your car.

With the iPod, you just walk in, plug in and listen.

Well, I get Sirius for the car and I also get Sirius Internet Radio.

Fully-streaming music right from my laptop (I've been pirating my

dad's subscription since February).

Here's the biggest dilemma I face: portability.

I can't take Sirius into the grocery store, or in the backpack when

I'm fishing (unless I get the Sirius mp3 player that allows you to

record your favorite songs).

So, I am conflicted.

I do know that I'm leaning toward getting the Sirius radio for the car

(I have Dish at home, so I get Sirius there, meaning I'd have

commercial-free tunes most everywhere I find myself) and a two-year

subscription.

And then saving my pennies for a 4-gig iPod Nano ($199) for the

new ipodnike technology to blend music

New iPod+Nike Technology To Blend Music and Workout

Nike and Apple have teamed up to create some new technology that

allows the iPod to become more integrated into the running experience,

including real-time feedback on your pace (spoken into your

headphones), tracking calorie burn on your iPod, and more. Check out

the demo here.

Here's an excerpt from the Business Week story:

"The co-branded kit comes with a sensor that fits inside compatible

Nike footwear -- sold separately -- and a wireless receiver that

attaches to the iPod.

Data on running time, distance, pace and calories burned would be

stored on the iPod, which could then display the information

on-screen or deliver it audibly through headphones.

After the workout, the data also could be automatically sent to a

personal runner's log at the new nikeplus.com Web site whenever the

music player is synchronized to Apple's iTunes program.

The iPod will also incorporate a new "Power Song" feature, so a

user can instantly queue up a piece of music for extra motivation

at the push of a button.

The $100 Nike+ Air Zoom Moire shoe will be the first footwear

designed to talk to the iPod, and more are planned, said Trevor

Edwards, Nike's vice president of global brand management."

Available July 13th, according to the San Jose Mercury News.

Steve Reich @ 70 @ BAM @ New York

Resuscitation of the Dying - Life Breath for New York

Steve Reich is hailed as America's greatest living composer.

Throughout the year, major performing arts organizations around the

world are marking his 70^th birthday with special events. Since New

York is the hometown of Reich, like many creative minds of his

generation, BAM Next Wave Festival that presents works of theater,

music, opera, and dance during each fall season, hosted the work of

two "popular" European choreographers, Anna Teresa de Keersmaeker and

Akhram Khan who had created at one point in their career pieces with

or to Reich's music.

New York's cultural organizations love such occasions, celebrations,

commemorations, and revivals of old legends, probably because in order

to thrive, the artistic scene needs such efforts of resuscitation. We

feel like the loving relatives of the about-to-be-deceased in an

emergency room! For example, at the beginning of the season each

September, there is a commemoration of John Cage at Dance Space

Project with readings and music. Recently, there was a celebration of

the re-opening of Judson Church in its actual site after an almost two

year long renovation. Its Monday night programs were moved temporarily

to Dance Theater Workshop during the renovation. I did not attend the

event, but, I've heard from those who did exactly what I was

expecting: Ghosts and spirits of 70s haunting the present in the

absence of anything or anyone to execute a proper burial for them.

Pedagogical Reflections upon Keersmaeker's Phases - Habituality and

Repetition

New York is almost home to Anna Teresa De Keersmaeker, not only

because she attended Tisch School of the Arts in early 80s, but also

because she appears every year either at BAM or at the Joyce Theater

which are the "big name" presenters with "big" money and "big" names

on their boards in NYC.

Surprisingly, or not so surprisingly, Keersmaeker's Fase: Four

Movement to the Music of Steve Reich presented tonight at BAM

corresponds to her years at Tisch. This piece premiered in 1982, upon

her return to Belgium from New York. This work, already a classic,

constitutes the foundational moment of her signature style and the

power of that style - minimal movement phrases unfolding with gradual,

almost unnoticeable variations within seemingly seamless repetitions,

creating a hypnotic, meditative quality, just like Reich's musical

compositions. She doesn't follow up to this earlier aesthetics in her

current work, although music continues to play a significant part in

her productions. Yet, I think the power of her name resides in these

early works.

The four phases of her work are entitled Violin Phase, Piano Phase,

Come Out and Clapping Music. (The corresponding music was composed by

Reich in the 60s). I think, at this moment, it is needless for me to

recite the features of the cool and calculated, minimal but

complicated, rational yet playful, hygienic yet seductive style of her

movement vocabulary and the relations she establishes with lighting,

space and music. There are many articles and books on this. I leave

the analysis of repetition, and the significations opened up by the

failures of exact repetitions, creating endless repetitions with "a"

difference to Derrida fans and Deleuzians.

What I caught myself thinking about this time during witnessing the

unfolding of this piece live for the second time, (excluding many

other times on video), was pedagogical concerns and questions and

challenges of habituating such a movement sequence on different

bodies, maybe also because the piece was danced (along with

Keersmaeker herself) by Tale Dolven, a relatively recent addition to

Keersmaeker's company Rosas. It is also because in my current

teaching, we are discussing "the lived body" and "embodied

intelligence of the world."

In this piece, it looks like, or it feels like (in a kinesthetical

empathy-wise sense), the learning and craftful execution of these

movement sequences within minimal yet calculated variations given a

certain fragment of time need the internalization of these movements

as "second nature." In a way, this is the artistic actualization of

the notion bio-power of Foucault that marks the calculated and

rationalized distribution of bodies within a given time and space

where they internalize motions of order, legibility and predictability

through repeated effort.

From a different yet compatible angle, Merleau Ponty's notion of habit

and bodily intelligence can help us understand how different

vocabularies of motility can be/come "second nature" to us. He writes

in his magnum opus Phenomenology of Perception (1968 [1964]) that our

actions and perceptions are largely habitual. This is the

pre-reflective base of learning - a language, playing the piano,

dancing, etc. Our skillful embodiment makes it possible for us to

react to situations in ways that have previously proved successful,

and which do not require purposive thought. We learn (as in language

games) not through conscious effort and reflection, but, through

repeated embodied efforts. Yet, our habitual mode of being is not

fixed, it is constantly being altered. Habit is therefore more like a

competence, a flexible skill. It is knowledge in the hands, which is

forthcoming only when bodily effort is made, as in the driving of the

car: we don't measure the car's size and compare it to the given space

in order to make a necessary maneuver for parking. The car is absorbed

into our bodily schema. It becomes an area of sensitivity which

extends the scope and active radius of the touch. It is the result of

a practical mastery of technique, not achieved by reflective or

interpretive thought. In the acquisition of habituality, it is our

body that understands. Consciousness is primarily not a matter of "I

think," but of "I can." Action is spontaneous and practical.

I will leave you on this note, and will come back on a different one.

Ipod purchase

Did you see that Myer have the Video Ipod for $349?

You can get the recorder for about $99 from Apple shops. We have to

the numbers they had.

british musicians send pope ipod nano

British musicians send pope iPod nano packed with modern church music

British musicians recorded the classic Irish hymn, "Sweet Heart of

Jesus," in a calypso, disco style and sent it to Pope Benedict XVI on

an iPod nano.

Pope Benedict might like it, or he might become the first pontiff in

history to throw an iPod into the trash. LOL

The musicians' intention, however, was to soften the pope's attitude

toward modern church music.

Stanley, and it features a new album of classic hymns reworked in

modern forms of music. The duo has used instruments such as pianos,

saxophones, guitars, drums and synthesizers to recreate centuries-old

works in laid-back gospel, folk, funk, soul and lounge-music styles.

sansa xpress one ups ipod shufoh wait

iPod Shuffle should have been. There's 1GB of memory, a small (but

EXISTENT) screen, playback controls, 15-hour battery life, and microSD

expansion all for just $59.99. Not bad for a flash-player.

It's too bad the iPod Shuffle has already switched to a clip-on form

factor, which is actually selling pretty damn well. If you're more

into the thumb-drive shape and more worried about Rhapsody than iTunes

interoperability, then this Sansa Xpress should be up your alley. -

SendStation iPod Dock Despite being slightly dismayed at the

tentacle-like look of this device, we can see the wisdom behind the

SendStation PocketDock AV. As its name suggests, it's a very small

iPod dock that packs a lot of power in its small and relatively

inexpensive (US$36.95) frame.

You can connect composite or S-Video, if iPod Video is your thing. You

can hook up left and right speakers. You can connect a microphone and

even a plain old USB device, like a laptop, for heavy-duty jamming or

viewing.

They will be out in stores starting early April. One thing you might

want to do until then is figure out where to store all those cables

when they're not all in use. They're all connected, yes, but that can

be an inconvenient thing since a case is not included.
